Cuatrecasas Acelera, the firm’s acceleration program for technology-based startups with innovative legal challenges, launched in 2016, today culminated its seventh edition with a hybrid Demo Day held in the auditorium of its Madrid office. After a day during which the heads of the participating startups presented their projects and demoed their progress before an expert jury made up of some of the leading representatives of the international entrepreneurial ecosystem, Union Avatars was awarded the highest recognition.
This Demo Day marks the end of a four-month program in which Cuatrecasas has provided legal, technological and business support, as well as access to clients, to six startups in the legaltech, healthtech, insurtech and web 3.0 sectors, including, for the first time, a Portuguese startup. The participating projects worked and made progress under the guidance of the more than 80 professionals who made up this year’s innovation committee and a team of legal mentors made up of the firm’s lawyers Elena Cuatrecasas, Rebeca Rodríguez, Miguel Sánchez Monjo, Elisabeth de Nadal, Alejandro Negro, Isabel Gandoy, Sónia Queiroz, Ariadna Casanueva and Joana Silveira Botelho.
During the session, the heads of Capboard, Clynx, DIVE Medical, Gocleer, Guzzu and Union Avatars, startups participating in the programme, gave a presentation on the progress of their projects to a select jury made up of: Rafael Fontana, executive chairman of Cuatrecasas; Francesc Muñoz, CIO of Cuatrecasas; Vasco Bivar and Diana Rivera, partners at Cuatrecasas; Alberto Gómez, managing partner of Adara Ventures; Aquilino Peña, Founding Partner of Kibo Ventures; and Eduardo Martínez, CEO and co-founder of Toqio and alumni of Cuatrecasas Acelera.
The panel’s deliberation was based on essential factors such as the proposition value of each project, its viability and business scalability, the team behind its foundation and development, as well as its evolution over the course of the programme. The final decision was unanimous: Union Avatars is the winning startup of an edition that has shone for the quality and projection of all the projects. Union Avatars focuses on the creation of avatars in the metaverse that automatically adjust to any platform, exploiting all the possibilities offered by web 3.0, an activity that is committed to a realistic virtual identity that allows the most secure digital experience in all fields. Its CEO and co-founder, Cai Felip, thanked the recognition as the best possible way to support the project: “Thanks to the Cuatrecasas programme we have been able to progress in the internationalisation of the company and the professionalisation of internal legal processes.”
After congratulating those responsible for the winning project, Rafael Fontana thanked all the attendees for attending the event and celebrated the good reception of a programme that is increasingly consolidated in the accelerator scene, which stands out especially for its ability to add value to the participating startups and the entrepreneurial ecosystem in general.
During the event, the heads of Bigle Legal, Parallel and Omnios, projects that have participated in previous editions, demonstrated the level of maturity reached by their startups, presenting some of the work they have carried out in collaboration with the Firm since their time with the accelerator. “After four months of the programme, very close relationships are created between mentors or collaborators and the startup, which continue after the end of the programme. Today we continue to collaborate with more than 50% of our startup portfolio. They are our best ambassadors,” said Alba Molina, Innovation project manager at Cuatrecasas.
Cuatrecasas Acelera has closed a new cycle, maintaining its interest in discovering and anticipating new business models that may arise, promoting the development of the most innovative proposals and strengthening the firm’s position in the entrepreneurial ecosystem. For his part, Francesc Muñoz confirms that the level of the firm’s accelerator is increasingly higher: “The degree of maturity of the startups that join us grows year after year, which motivates us, and forces us, to continue innovating and making each edition more attractive to startups. For this next edition, Artificial Intelligence will be one of the main focuses of the programme.”
