Penningtons Manches Cooper has announced its largest ever round of partner promotions as 12 individuals join the partnership today, bringing the total number of partners to 137. Among these promotions is the one of Victor Mata in Madrid.
Victor Mata, a Spanish qualified lawyer based in the Madrid office advises on a wide range of contentious and non-contentious matters. His practice includes shipping, transport, logistics, insurance, international trade and litigation, with particular expertise in handling personal injury claims, salvage proceedings and cargo claims on behalf of local and international clients.
He has nearly 15 years’ experience in advising on contentious and non-contentious matters, having appeared before domestic and international arbitration bodies. He has particular expertise in handling personal injury claims before Commercial, Labour and Criminal courts, salvage proceedings, ship arrests, cargo claims and complex recoveries.
He is a member of the Spanish Maritime Law Association and a Spanish average adjuster, advising P&I clubs, shipowners, freight forwarders, salvage companies and insurers on a broad range of matters. He lectures on Maritime Law both locally and internationally and has authored many articles and book chapters.
Prior to qualifying in 2005, Victor worked for shipping lines and freight forwarders, gaining substantial experience in practical issues. He subsequently practised in national and international law firms including DLA Piper, KPMG Espana and Thomas Cooper LLP. He is highly regarded for his work within the Spanish shipping sector and is recognised by Chambers and Partners.
He joined legacy firm Thomas Cooper in 2014 before it merged with Penningtons Manches in 2019. He is a Law graduate from Universidad Complutense de Madrid and holds a Master´s degree in Law and Maritime Business from Universidad Pontificia Comillas.
