France’s state-owned energy giant EDF, grows in Spain through its Italian company Edison, the second largest energy company in the country after Enel. The Milan-based company announced an investment plan of €2,500 billion until 2030 with the launch of Edison Next (formerly EDF Fenice), a decarbonisation solutions firm for companies and public administrations.
The launch of Edison Next follows the acquisition of Citelum and Sistrol. “Citelum is the second largest public lighting supplier in Italy and the fifth largest in Spain, operating in cities such as Venice, Naples and Syracuse, Barcelona, Madrid and Seville. For its part, Sistrol is a digital company specialising in energy services for the tertiary sector in Spain,” says the company headed by Nicola Monti. Despite the company’s new developments, Edison has a long history in Spain. Formerly called EDF Fenice, it has been operating on the Iberian Peninsula since the 1990s.
Baker McKenzie advised EDF Fenice Ibérica on the acquisition of Sistrol with a team comprising partner Enrique Carretero, team leader Carlos Jimenez de Laiglesia and associate Modesto Puerta.
